Introduction to ASHA Programme

The concept of bringing quality health care services to the rural poor in our country and state has been the baseline on which National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) is working and to facilitate this aspect Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) was introduced to reach each and every village and now more recently ASHA Facilitator has been introduced to extend handhold support to ASHAs and also to improve the outreach services. ASHA programme is a critical component of National Rural Health Mission which aim at actively engaging communities in improving health status.

Who is ASHA?
  • ASHA is a trained female community health activist at the village level for catering health care services at the doorstep of villagers.


  • ASHA is the first port of call for any health related demands of deprived sections of the population, especially women and children, who find it difficult to access health services.


  • ASHA is a health activist in the community who creates awareness on health and its social determinants and mobilizes the community towards local health planning and increased utilization and accountability of the existing health services.

    Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H) was created in March,1995 and re-named as Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in November, 2003 with a view to providing focused attention to development of Education & Research in Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems. The Department continued to lay emphasis on upgradation of AYUSH educational standards, quality control and standardization of drugs, improving the availability of medicinal plant material, research and development and awareness generation about the efficacy of the systems domestically and internationally
