Intercommunal Conflict

Intercommunal Conflict

Intercommunal conflict is the term used to describe conflict that occurs between competing groups within a state. It may arise over disputes concerning access to scarce resources or political power. Such conflicts may lead to violent warfare between the two or more defined communities that are involved. Ethnic conflict represents just one manifestation of intercommunal conflict. It is the product of ethnic tensions, strained economic, political, and social conditions, as well as political objectives of those in positions of power. These intercommunal conflicts have grown in importance in recent years and the primary concern of the international community is that state sovereignty combined with the domestic nature of the conflict stands as a barrier to effective international intervention. Thus, such conflicts pose a unique challenge to the international community in its attempts to bring peace to these areas and to end human suffering.

in Myanmar

Several waves of clashes between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims, the first of which occurred in June, have left 115,000 people displaced, as well as more than 100 dead, according to UN estimates.
